London Court of Internation Arbitration (LCIA) Arbitration:  What you need to know

Aim and objectives
This seminar will address the most important elements of practice and procedure of one of the foremost international arbitral institutions; the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA).

The aims of the seminar are to: (i) further build upon the general context of institutional arbitration laid out in previous seminars in this series, (ii) deepen knowledge of the workings of a leading international arbitral institution often used by Irish parties or parties retaining Irish counsel, and (iii) allow attendees to use any lessons learned in the session in the future provision of services for clients involved in LCIA arbitrations. 

This seminar is suitable for: solicitors and barristers new to the area and those with some experience of international arbitration. 

Topics and Description
This seminar will take the audience through the most important elements of practice and procedure of the LCIA. The speakers from the institution will describe the full lifecycle of an LCIA arbitration case, and focus in particular on the following elements:

(1) explaining the organisation of the institution and the division of procedural functions between the Secretariat and the LCIA Court; 
(2) describing the application of the LCIA Arbitration Rules by the above two bodies through the lens of the important procedural milestones; and
(3) discussing any practical tips for practitioners acting as counsel in LCIA arbitrations.

Sean McCarthy BL, The Bar of Ireland
Sean McCarthy is an Irish barrister, New York attorney and international arbitration consultant. He is a former Deputy Counsel at the ICC Secretariat in Paris and the current ICC YAF Representative for Ireland. Sean is also a co-founder and moderator for ArbTech, an online community focused on exploring the future of justice and the intersection between law and technology.

Speakers 

Jacomijn van Haersolte-van Hof (LCIA Director General) 
Jackie has been the Director General of the LCIA since 2014. Previously, she practised as counsel and arbitrator in The Hague, at her GAR 100 boutique HaersolteHof (which she set up in 2008 after three years as counsel in the international arbitration group at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in Amsterdam). From 2000 – 2004 Jackie was with De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek in The Hague, and before that with Loeff Claeys Verbeke in Rotterdam, which she joined on her qualification in 1992. 
Jackie continues to sit as arbitrator and has handled cases under the ICSID, ICC, LCIA and UNCITRAL Rules, as well as those of the Netherlands Arbitration Institute (NAI), and UNUM, the Institute of Transport, Arbitration & Mediation, and at the Royal Dutch Grain and Feed Trade Association, based in the Netherlands. She is on the ICSID roster of arbitrators and was and is a member, including as president, of several ICSID Annulment Committees.
Jackie was involved in setting up the arbitral process for the Claims Resolution Tribunal in Zurich, which analysed claims from Holocaust survivors over dormant accounts in Swiss banks. She is the professor of arbitration law at Leiden University and a member of GAR’s editorial board.

Eliana Tornese (LCIA Registrar) 
Eliana joined the LCIA as Deputy Registrar in November 2015. Prior to this, she worked at the ICC, where she spent three years as Counsel in charge of the case management team handling arbitration matters related to Western Europe. Before joining the ICC, Eliana spent seven years in the international arbitration practice at BonelliErede in Milan. She holds a dual degree in law from the Sorbonne University in Paris and LUISS University in Rome, and an LLM in European Law from the College of Europe in Belgium. In 2009, she was a visiting scholar at Columbia Law School.

Wing Shek (LCIA Deputy Registrar) 
Wing joined the LCIA full time as Counsel in 2009, after receiving her LLM from the School of Oriental and African Studies. Prior to this, she spent three years at the International Commission on Holocaust Era Insurance Claims (ICHEIC), where she worked with European insurance companies, claimants and arbitrators, and administered arbitrations in her role as Case Analyst and Appeals Process Advisor. Wing holds an LLB from Queen Mary University of London.
