Aim and objectives

Regulation Matters is a series of four lunchtime webinars looking at key regulatory issues affecting you and your work in practice. Each webinar in the series is a standalone event, so you can select the topics of most interest to you.

This is the third webinar in the series and is focused on cybercrime. The one hour webinar aims to outline recent trends in cyberattacks and advise you on ways to help reduce your risk. 

This webinar is suitable for: solicitors (and colleagues involved in IT and financial management in a law firm).

Learning outcomes

At the end of this webinar participants will be able to:

  • Gain knowledge of recent cyberattacks and learn from the experience of others
  • Appreciate best practice tools and procedures
  • Recognise possible red flags and potential points of exposure
  • Benefit from advice on ways to mitigate risk
  • Assess your own practice and procedures so you can consider scope for improvement
  • Put practical methods in place to reduce risk

Chairperson

Eamonn Maguire, Law Society of Ireland Regulatory Communications Manager 

Eamonn Maguire has worked for the Law Society over many years, across several roles. He was previously responsible for regulating solicitors’ advertising and was secretary to the advertising sub-division of the Regulation of Practice Committee. Following this, Eamonn worked as the Law Society’s Complaints and Compliance Manager, ensuring the orderly wind-up of the Complaints and Client Relations Section. In his current role as Regulatory Communications Manager, Eamonn is focused on improving the way the Law Society supports and guides solicitors in meeting their regulatory obligations. Eamonn is also secretary to the Guidance and Ethics Committee.

Speakers 

Rory O'Neill, Financial Controller – Compensation Fund, Law Society of Ireland 

Rory is a Fellow Chartered Accountant and is the Financial Controller of the Compensation Fund.  Prior to this, Rory spent 14 years as an investigating accountant, carrying out over 500 investigations and has been involved in a number of contentious matters before the High Court and Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal.  He has been consulted in relation to regulatory matters on state projects and is extensively involved in raising the profession’s awareness of cybercrime and property fraud and the risk they pose to practices.
