Solicitor appointed to private security board

'Significant progress' in regulating bouncers

Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan has named the new board at the Private Security Authority.

Noel Lappin returns as chairman while UCD graduate and solicitor Geraldine Kelly of the Dublin Solicitors' Bar Association is also reappointed.

Padraic Cafferty has been reappointed to represent private security employers along with industry professionals Alan Durnan, Christy Waters and Sean Harding.

Chartered accountant Richard O'Farrell has been named as a discretionary non-defined appointee while Assistant Commissioner John O'Driscoll represents the gardaí.

John Garry represents the Minister for Justice and Equality and Bryan Redmond represents the Minister for Education and Skills.

Siobhán Carew is the elected staff representative. 

Minister Flanagan said "Private security staff occupy a position of trust, engaging in regular interactions with members of the public. It is therefore essential that this area is properly regulated in order to protect public safety and confidence.

“The Authority has made significant progress in regulating the private security industry since its establishment in 2005. I believe that confidence in the industry has greatly improved due to the manner in which the Authority carries out its functions, providing clients of private security service providers with assurance that the industry is working to the highest standards possible,” he said.
