The third act - how to live well in later life

A midlife affair re-unites two very different sisters in Finding Your Feet, a gentle and well-cast comedy. The film gently explores the theme of what it means to live well in late life with a highly-accomplished cast of British actors, all aged over fifty.

Sandra is a suburban snob, beautifully played by Imelda Staunton. Sandra comes to stay with her free-spirited sister Bif, played by Celia Imrie, after discovering her husband of 35 years has been having an affair. The revelation has a devastating effect on Sandra, who arrives weeping and broken-hearted to her sister’s inner-city London council flat.

Hippie

Bif is a right-on hippie in total contrast with her sister’s uptight and fragile demeanour.

Sandra gradually loosens up under the influence of Bif and her eccentric circle, which includes the Jackie, expertly played with Bohemian flair by Joanna Lumley.

Timothy Spall is Charlie, the love interest in the charming ensemble cast. Staunton is superb as the woebegone Sandra, gradually finding herself again after years of playing second fiddle to her husband.

Passion

She begins to dance with the local amateur group, rekindling a youthful passion, and literally finding her feet.

The film gently explores the theme of what it means to live well in late life. The locational scenes are superb and show London at its brilliant best: a flash mob at Piccadilly Circus; outdoor swimming at Hampstead Ponds and Charlie’s houseboat on the Thames.
