Justice Mary Irvine goes to the Supreme Court

Justice Mary Irvine has been appointed to the Supreme Court. 

Solicitors John O’Leary and Patricia Harney and barrister Treasa Kelly have also been appointed to the District Court.

Under section 17 of the Courts and Court Officers Act 1995 (as amended) procedures in respect of the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board do not apply where a sitting judge is nominated for appointment.

Justice Mary Irvine was educated at University College Dublin and the Kings Inns. She was called to the Bar in 1978 and to the Inner Bar in 1996.

Working Group

Justice Irvine was appointed to the High Court in 2007 and to the Court of Appeal in 2014. She is also chair of the Working Group on Medical Negligence and Periodic Payments.

Justice Irvine will continue as chair of the proposed cervical check compensation tribunal.

John O’Leary was educated at University College Dublin and qualified as a solicitor in 1983.

He is chair of the Mental Health Tribunal under the Mental Health Act 2001 and is experienced in criminal law and family law.

Patricia Harney was educated at the Law Society of Ireland and qualified as a solicitor in 1978.

Council member

She is a council member of the Law Society, sitting as a member of the Complaints and Client Relations Committee and the Solicitors’ Disciplinary Tribunal, as well as being widely experienced in family law and conveyancing cases.

Treasa Kelly was educated at Trinity College Dublin, and called to the Bar in 2001.

She is Registrar to the Irish Financial Services Appeals Tribunal and chair of the Quantity Surveyors and Building Surveyors Boards of the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland.

Treasa Kelly also has wide experience in personal injuries, chancery, employment law and landlord and tenant cases.
