Grandparents and guardianship – a legal update

Grandparents and their guardianship explained

The legal rights of grandparents to access and guardianship will be probed in a seminar on the role of the solicitor and older clients.

Run by Law Society Professional Training the event takes place on 8 May from 2-5pm at Blackhall Place and qualifies for three general CPD points.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Rights of grandparents to access and guardianship: an update
  • Safeguarding older clients: financial abuse
  • Section 117 of the Succession Act 1965 – practice and procedure and recent developments  

The seminar will be chaired by Padraic Courtney of the Law Society Solicitors for the Elderly.

Succession law

Speakers include Mark O’Riordan, a barrister specialising in the areas of succession, probate, equity, trusts, enduring powers of attorney, wards of court, and commercial landlord & tenant law. 

He will be joined by senior counsel Teresa Blake who practises in child protection and welfare law and is chair of the Mental Health Tribunal and Dr Amanda Phelan of the National Centre for the Protection of Older People, UCD.

Also speaking is Dr Adam McAuley, Director of Teaching & Learning, DCU.
