Suite of services on hand for newly-qualified solicitors

PPC students at Blackhall Place were reminded today that there is a place for them on the Younger Members’ Committee for a full seven years after qualification, irrespective of their age.

The committee was re-established in 2015, partly to enable younger members establish contact with their own demographic within the profession.

Jennifer Dorgan (chair) and Avril Flannery (vice chair) of the Younger Members Committee, gave a presentation to trainee solicitors on the PPCII course, detailing the structure of the Society and supports available to them after qualification.

Vice chair of the committee Avril Flannery told the students that the profession has changed enormously over the last decades and that an ‘always on’ culture can contribute to work stresses.

Potential

“Our aim is to help younger members reach their full potential by helping them to deal with everyday stresses,” she explained.

The committee runs an annual seminar with a focus on workplace wellbeing, yielding three professional CPD points for those who attend.

The Younger Members Committee has also produced a guide to flexible working.

Supports

The various Law Society supports for members, from student days right up until retirement, were also examined in detail at the talk.

Those seeking to apply for work in Britain were reminded to always include an address in that country in order to progress their application.

Avril Flannery reminded the students that job dissatisfaction can often arise from simply working too hard, and not seeing enough of family and friends.

Career advice

Free career advice is also available to all Law Society members, including consultations by video link.

The students were also reminded that they will retain full Law Society library access and resources after graduation.

Lawyers also have access to Law Society court facilities at both the Four Courts and the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin.
