A recruitment competition for the new role of deputy commissioner of An Garda Síochána (AGS) has been announced.

The Policing Authority has asked the Public Appointments Service to nominate a person to the role of deputy commissioner.

Selection process

The recruitment and selection process will be carried out in accordance with requirements relating to knowledge, ability and suitability, prepared by the Authority and approved by the Minister for Justice and Equality Charlie Flanagan.

“There is a unique opportunity for a new Deputy Commissioner to contribute to the strategic development and transformation of the Irish police service ... as outlined in the Government’s four-year implementation plan for A Policing Service for the Future, which gives effect to the recommendations of the report of the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland,” the Policing Authority said this morning.

It is looking for a “highly qualified and experienced candidate with the ability to drive positive change”.

Senior rank

Applicants must be from a policing background and holding a senior rank at the level of at least assistant commissioner or equivalent.
