UCD School of Law will host a seminar along with the launch of The Transformation of EU Treaty-Making on 27 September, 2018.

The launch takes place in the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) on Dawson Street, Dublin 2 at 5.15 pm.

The book, subtitled The Rise of Parliaments, Referendums and Courts since 1960 is written by Dr Dermot Hodson and Professor Imelda Maher, Dean of UCD Law School.

Distinguished judge

The evening will begin with a seminar on the subject of the transformation of EU treaty making which will be chaired by the distinguished Mr Justice Gerard Hogan, of the Court of Justice of the EU.

Professor Jo Shaw (University of Edinburgh) and Professor David Phinnemore (Queens University Belfast) will speak as well as the two authors.

Insights

This publication is a major study of EU treaty-making and gives insights into the links between EU law and national constitutions.

It provides important evidence on classic theoretical debates in international relations and examines the interplay between trust, legitimacy and treaty-making.

Reforming ideas

The book also challenges the prevailing consensus that mechanisms of EU treaty-making are too rigid. It also provides new evidence about the factors driving treaty amendment and ideas for reforming EU treaty making.

Dr Hodson is reader in political economy and assistant dean for teaching and learning in Birkbeck College, University of London. He is a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, the College of Europe, Bruges and the London School of Economics and also worked as an economist at the European Commission’s directorate general for economic and financial affairs before joining Birkbeck.

Professor Imelda Maher is the Dean of Law and the inaugural Sutherland Full Professor of European Law. She is interested in the relationship between law and governance especially in economic spheres.

She has published extensively on competition law and also on EU governance and presents her work regularly at international conferences and workshops.
