Man, 24, first to be charged under emergency powers

The first person has been charged with breaching COVID-19 movement restrictions.

Denis Constantin (24), originally from Romania but living at Shinguan, Mile House Road in Enniscorthy, faces two charges of contravening emergency legislation signed into law last month.

He appeared before Judge Brian O’Shea at Gorey District Court sitting in Wexford yesterday.

Stopped

It is alleged that gardaí stopped him twice over the Easter weekend when he was more than two kilometres from his home.

The gardaí say he was near Bunclody on Good Friday, and near New Ross in Co Wexford on Easter Monday.

Constantine is also charged with three other offences, including driving without a licence or insurance while disqualified.

He made no reply and was refused bail to appear again in court next Tuesday.
