Arthur Cox wins pro bono award for PILA initiative

Law firm Arthur Cox, which is celebrating its 100th year in business, has been recognised at the Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation Awards, which took place virtually on Wednesday.

Lex Mundi is a network of independent law firms, and Arthur Cox is its member firm for Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Social change

The awards are presented to Lex Mundi member firms who provide outstanding pro bono support. Arthur Cox received the award for member firms in Europe.

The foundation aims to use Lex Mundi’s network to support those working to bring about social change. It does this by working with Lex Mundi lawyers to provide critical pro bono legal services.

Arthur Cox, led by managing partner Geoff Moore (pictured), collaborated with the foundation to complete a multi-jurisdictional pro bono project for the Free Legal Advice Centre (FLAC) through Public Interest Law Alliance (PILA).

Project

PILA is an Irish network which facilitates pro bono representation to the most vulnerable in society and encourages the legal community to use law to advance social change.

Arthur Cox lawyers Greg Glynn and Zac Van Horn led the project, which involved in-depth research on issues relating to access to civil legal aid for survivors of domestic violence across 10 jurisdictions worldwide.

The resulting research was collated as a “best practices” survey and is assisting FLAC in advocating for improvements to the civil legal aid system for victims of domestic violence in Ireland.
