Green veto on AG with views ‘counter to green principles’

The Green Party’s justice spokesman Roderic O’Gorman (pictured) has confirmed that his party will be seeking the office of Attorney General.

During an online debate about the party’s deal to enter government with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, he said, however, that there was no guarantee the party would get the post.

“We will have a veto on the person appointed,” he added, saying the party would not allow someone who had views counter to Green principles to take the position.

Direct provision

Deputy O’Gorman also said direct provision would be ended if the Green Party enters government.

He told party members a white paper on ending the system of accommodating asylum seekers and replacing it with a not-for-profit housing model would be published by the end of the year.

Two-thirds of Green Party members must back the agreement to allow the party to go into government.
