Irish barrister elected vice-chair of EU rights body

Irish barrister Sunniva McDonagh (pictured) has been elected vice-chair of the EU’s Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA).

She was already a member of the EU body’s 30-member management board, which held elections earlier this week.

Sunniva McDonagh takes up the new post on 13 July, when France’s Elise Barbé will also become the FRA’s new chair.

The Irish barrister is also a commission member of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.

Another Irish lawyer, solicitor Michael O’Flaherty, is currently the FRA’s director.
