Local lockdowns have resumed in Germany after a coronavirus outbreak linked to a meatpacking plant. Restrictions will return in the Gütersloh district of the North Rhine-Westphalia state, home to about 360,000 people.

It is the first return of containment measures since Germany began lifting its lockdown in May.

The country was widely praised for its response to the pandemic but there are concerns that infections are rising again.

Lothar Wieler, head of Germany's public health body the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), told reporters today that the country was at risk of a second wave of infections but said he was optimistic they could prevent it.

Currently the reproduction rate or R number in Germany is estimated at 2.76.

Meanwhile, premature newborn triplets in Mexico have tested positive for coronavirus in an "unprecedented" case, according to local health authorities.

Doctors fear the disease could have been passed on through the mother's placenta during pregnancy.

Two of the babies, one boy and one girl, are in a stable condition in a hospital in San Luis Potosí state.

But the second boy is receiving treatment for a respiratory condition.

A very small number of newborn babies have been known to pick up the virus after birth.

However, Health Secretary Mónica Liliana Rangel Martínez said: "It would be impossible for them to have been infected at the moment of birth."

The three babies all tested positive for coronavirus on the day of their birth.

The parents are currently being tested, with authorities saying they may have been asymptomatic.

Mexico has recorded more than 185,000 coronavirus cases and 22,584 deaths since the country's first case on 28 February.
