Former AG Séamus Woulfe goes to Supreme Court

The government yesterday (15 July) nominated former Attorney General (AG) Séamus Woulfe as a judge of the Supreme Court.

The nomination follows a recommendation by the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board (JAAB), which is chaired by the Chief Justice.

The vacancy arose after the retirement of Justice Mary Finlay Geoghegan last year.

Jesuit-educated Dubliner Séamus Woulfe was called to the bar in 1987 and to the inner bar in 2005.

He was appointed AG when Leo Varadkar became Taoiseach in June 2017 and served in the position until last month, when Paul Gallagher was appointed as the new AG.

Solicitor nominated as a judge

The cabinet also agreed to nominate solicitor Mary Morrissey for appointment as a judge of the Circuit Court after the death of Judge John Hannan earlier this year.

This nomination also follows a recommendation by the JAAB.

She was educated at the National University of Ireland Galway and the Law Society of Ireland and qualified as a solicitor in 1999.
