Chief justice to deliver opening Hardiman lecture

This year’s Hardiman Lecture series will begin on Tuesday, 8 June, at 16.20 and the talks will be made available online.

Booking is advisable and is now open.

The lectures honour the memory of the late Supreme Court judge, Mr Justice Adrian Hardiman.

The series opens on Tuesday with a lecture from the Chief Justice, Frank Clarke, entitled ‘The United States and the European Union – some observations on courts’.

Other topics in the lecture series include:

  • Black Lives Matter,
  • Constitutions,
  • Unearthing the constitutional origins of the Constitution of Ireland,
  • Principle of judicial independence in the EU, and,
  • Modern law reform.

Law students

The Hardiman Lecture Series forms a key element of the chief justice’s summer placement programme for law students, which began in 2013 under then Chief Justice Mrs Justice Susan Denham.

Each year, during the Trinity legal term, the chief justice hosts students in a placement programme that provides students from third-level institutions in Ireland, Wales and the United States, with work experience with a judge of the superior courts.

Last year, owing to the prevailing public-health restrictions, both the placement programme and Hardiman lecture series moved online.

Lectures will be pre-recorded and delivered on Zoom at the scheduled time. Speakers will participate in a live question-and-answer session at the conclusion of each lecture.

The Chatham House Rule applies, and any matters discussed during the lecture may not repeated outside the forum.
