Law Society webinar on war in Ukraine

The Law Society is hosting a special webinar on the war in Ukraine, entitled ‘Upholding the Rule of International Law’, on Thursday 7 April.

The online event will hear unique perspectives on the unprovoked invasion from one of Ukraine’s leading lawyers, Anna Babych, followed by a panel discussion on the rule of law, and what lawyers throughout Europe can do to help.

The hour-long webinar, which starts at 2.30pm, is free of charge, and open to all Law Society members and trainee solicitors. Advance registration – by 12pm on Thursday 7 April – is required for this event.

Panellists

The President of the Law Society of Ireland Michelle Ní Longáin will chair a panel discussion featuring:

  • Anna Babych (executive partner, Aequo),
  • James MacGuill (President of the CCBE, and past-president of the Law Society), and
  • Gary Lee (Chair of the Law Society’s Human Rights and Equality Committee).

Regarded by industry experts as one of Ukraine’s leading transactional lawyers, Anna Babych focuses on international and domestic mergers and acquisitions, equity capital markets, and providing general corporate commercial advice to private and public companies.

She also represents clients on a broad range of matters related to setting up optimal legal structures for businesses in Ukraine.

James MacGuill, managing partner at MacGuill and Company, is a specialist in public law, especially criminal law. He has been actively involved in the Law Society of Ireland, has chaired many of its committees, and served as President of the Law Society in 2007-2008. He joined the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) in 2008.

Gary Lee is managing solicitor of Ballymun Community Law Centre, elected Law Society Council member, chair of the Law Society’s Human Rights and Equality Committee, and chairperson of Mental Health Tribunals.

He is also the immediate past-chairperson of the Disability Federation of Ireland, and has been appointed by Government to various committees, work groups and task forces over the years.
