DPC decision on TikTok within a month

Ireland’s data watchdog will adopt a final decision on its investigation into social-media platform TikTok within a month, after a decision by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB).

Under GDPR law, the board steps in to settle disputes between national data regulators.

In 2021, the Data Protection Commission (DPC) began a GDPR-compliance probe into TikTok in connection with the processing of children's personal data.

No consensus

The DPC submitted a draft decision to other national regulators, some of which raised objections.

As no consensus could be reached, the EDPB was asked to step in.

It said that its binding decision addressed legal questions arising from the objections, which included questions about whether there had been an infringement of data protection by design and default with regard to age verification, and whether there had been an infringement of the principle of fairness with regard to certain design practices.
