Hard-fought final to legal-negotiation contest

Ten law-school teams participated in the 2023 National Negotiation Competition hosted by the Law Society of Ireland at the weekend.

The event was held on campus at Blackhall Place on Saturday (18 February).

Carla Fusciardi Wallace and Justin McAleese, representing King’s Inns, emerged as the winners.

They overcame the Law Society team of Andrea Whelton and Sarah Courtney in the final, where the parties were tasked with negotiating the employment package for an international museum director.

John Lunney (course manager at the Law Society) was the competition convenor, in his role as national representative of the International Negotiation Competition.

He explained that the competition involved teams of two law students representing a party or a client, and negotiating an international business transaction, or the resolution of an international dispute, with an opposing team of two law students.

The winning Kings Inn’s team will now represent Ireland in the international competition, which is to be held in Italy in the summer.
