Future of drug policy in Ireland – a discussion

The Law Society Diversity and Inclusion committee will shortly host Fr Peter McVerry SJ and Senator Lynn Ruane at Blackhall Place for a discussion on the future of drugs policy in Ireland.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday 21 March at 6pm and will consist of speeches, followed by discussion and Q&A.

Changes

The discussion from the committee and audience will cover contemporary drug law in Ireland, its effectiveness in reducing drug use and the potential future changes in law in this area.

There will be a particular focus on how drug law impacts on those from lower socio-economic groups and how those living in poverty may benefit from reform in this area.

With multiple bills in the Oireachtas in this area in recent years, a new Citizen's Assembly and a new safe injection centre in Dublin, now is an opportune moment for trainee solicitors and others to reflect on drug policy in Ireland, the committee believes.
