New car registrations up by 1,232 last month

The number of new cars licensed in April increased by 1,232 vehicles (12%) compared with April 2022, CSO data shows.

In the first four months of 2023, 17% of all new cars licensed for the first time were electric compared with 13% in the same period in 2022.

One-fifth diesel

Slightly over one-fifth (22%) of new private cars licensed in the first four months of 2023 were diesel, compared with more than a quarter (26%) in the same period in 2022 

The number of used cars licensed in the first four months of 2023 rose by 5% compared with the same period in 2022 (16,022 versus 15,287).

There were 5,779 used (imported) diesel private cars licensed in the first four months of 2023, compared with 5,974 in first four months of 2022, a fall of 3%.

Volkswagen (1,409) was the most popular make of new private cars licensed in April 2023.
