Annual rise of 14% in number of new homes

Official figures show that 8,452 new homes were completed in the third quarter (Q3) of this year – an increase of 14% compared with the same period last year.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures show that a jump in apartment completions was the main factor in the increase – this category recorded a 47% annual increase to 3,373.

Homes in housing schemes rose by 1.5% to 3,627, while single dwellings fell by almost 5% to 1,452.

Dublin leads increase

Almost 43% of completions in the quarter were in housing schemes, while just under 40% were apartments.

Six of the eight regions recorded annual increases in Q3, with a jump of almost 37% in Dublin. There were falls, however, in the South-West and South-East.

The CSO also said that the number of new homes built in Q3 was up 12.3% compared with the previous quarter, when seasonal variations are taken into account.
