JAC bill is referred to Supreme Court

Legislation on how judges are to be appointed is to be referred to the Supreme Court for a test of its constitutionality.

This decision comes after a meeting of the Council of State yesterday, which considered the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2022.

60 days

The Supreme Court now has 60 days to hear arguments about the constitutionality of the bill.

It is the 16th bill since 1940 to be referred to the Supreme Court for a decision on its constitutionality.
