Council election nominations open next week
Nominations for election to the Law Society Council will open next Tuesday (20 August) and will close at 5pm on 10 September.
As was the case last year, nominations and voting will be online only.
Comprising 31 elected members, four provincial delegates and 13 nominated members, the Council represents the Law Society and its members, both in the interests of the public and of the solicitors’ profession generally.
Provincial elections this year are in Leinster and Munster.
Diversity
Council members play an important role in supporting and developing the future of the solicitors’ profession.
The Law Society is urging any solicitor who would like to contribute opinions and expertise to consider running.
The greater the diversity of membership across different areas of law, experience, location, and practice type, the more relevant the representation on Council.
Speaking to Gazette.ie last month, McCann FitzGerald employment-law partner Donal Hamilton, who was elected to the Law Society Council in 2023, described his experience of serving on the Council as “extremely positive”, and encouraged others to get involved.
Membership details
Any solicitor holding current Law Society membership has the opportunity to put themselves forward for Council. If elected, the term is for two years.
Anyone interested in putting their name forward should check that their membership and contact details are up to date.
A Law Society member can nominate no more than a total of two candidates, whether for the annual election or a provincial election.
Voting this year will open on 4 October, running until 5pm on 17 October. The results will be announced at the Law Society’s annual general meeting on 7 November.
Anyone with queries on the election can contact councilelections@lawsociety.ie.
