Legal Intern's Playbook: the 10 top tips

For an aspiring legal professional, securing an internship can be a critical step, offering the chance to gain practical experience, build a professional network and develop essential skills.

With just under two weeks to go until applications open for the Mason Hayes & Curran 2025 internship programme, this year’s intern cohort share their top tips for future interns.

1. Be proactive and take initiative

Don’t wait for tasks to come to you, actively seek out opportunities to contribute. Taking initiative demonstrates a strong work ethic and a genuine interest in learning, which will be noticed by your colleagues.  Every experience is a learning opportunity,

2. Ask questions when you're unsure

You’re not expected to know everything as an intern. It's better to clarify any doubts or uncertainties than to make assumptions that could lead to mistakes,

3. Be organised and manage your time effectively

Develop a system for keeping track of tasks, deadlines and priorities to ensure you meet all your responsibilities,

4. Be open to feedback

Feedback is a key part of the learning process. Use feedback as an opportunity to improve and grow, while demonstrate your willingness to learn and develop,

5. Network and build relationships

Internships are not only about the work, they are also about the people you meet. Make an effort to attend any social events and build relationships with colleagues at all levels. A strong professional network can be invaluable as your career progresses,

6. Be adaptable and willing to learn

The legal field is constantly evolving, so embrace opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills. Flexibility and the ability to adapt to shifting priorities will serve you well in managing the demands of the internship,

7. Focus on attention to detail

In a law firm, precision is key. Even minor errors can have significant implications. Double-check your work to ensure accuracy and demonstrate your attention to detail,

8. Maintain a positive attitude

A positive attitude is crucial. Even during busy times, staying engaged and enthusiastic will help you stand out as a team player and contribute to a supportive work environment,

9. Take time to reflect

Throughout your internship, take the time to reflect on your experiences. Consider what areas of law you find most interesting and identify areas for personal and professional growth,

10. Enjoy the experience

Your internship will be a challenging but rewarding experience. Trust the process, enjoy the journey and remember that everyone around you is there to support and guide you.
