Mean electricity use highest in A/B-rated buildings

Restaurants and public houses consumed more than twice the electricity per square metre of offices in 2023, CSO data shows.

Eating and drinking houses used 195 kilowatt hours per square metre in 2023 while retail units used 138 kilowatt hours and office buildings used 80 kilowatt hours.

Median use

Median annual electricity consumption in non-domestic buildings decreased in 2023 compared with 2022 in each energy rating category, the data shows.

Mean electricity consumption per square metre was highest in A/B-rated buildings (137 kWh/m2) and lowest in E-rated buildings (95 kWh/m2).

Retail units with A/B ratings used 159 kWh/m2 in 2023.

This was 47% more than the 108 kWh/m2 used by those rated F/G.

Offices with A/B ratings consumed 88 kWh/m2 in 2023, 21% more than the 73 kWh/m2 used by those rated F/G.
