IRC document aims to combat ‘misinformation’

The Irish Refugee Council (IRC) has published a document that it says seeks to “clearly set out the rights, entitlements, and duties related to people seeking protection in Ireland”.

The updated FAQ (frequently asked questions) is aimed at explaining the international-protection procedure and process.

The council says that it provides answers to questions linked to issues such as the right to work, accommodation provision, social welfare, and the legal basis for these entitlements.

‘Harmful stereotyping’

It also explains the differences between terms like ‘international-protection applicant’ and ‘refugee’ and sets out the criteria and thresholds to be recognised as a refugee, or to receive a different type of protection or permission to remain in Ireland.

Ciara Ross (policy and advocacy officer, IRC) expressed concern about what she described as “the amplification of misinformation and divisive narratives” on the issue in recent months.

“We are most concerned about the normalising of harmful stereotyping, and the distinct lack of easy to access, understandable information on protection issues, and hope this document is helpful,” she added.
