10,033 abortions carried out in Ireland last year

A total of 10,033 abortions were carried out in Ireland in 2023, the fifth year of legalised termination of pregnancy  under the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018.

The figures cover the period from 1 January until 31 December 2023 and are a significant jump on the 8,156 abortions carried out in 2022.

A total of 21 procedures were carried out due to a risk to life or health under the grounds set out in section 9 of the act.

Seven babies were aborted due to a risk to life or health in an emergency situation under section 10, while 129 were due to a fatal foetal anomaly under section 11, and 9,876 terminations took place in early pregnancy under section 12 of the act. 

The highest number of abortions was carried out in May (902), followed by January (878) and March (874).

The month with fewest was February (683).
