CAS Olympics arm issues first decision

A division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) set up for the Olympic Games in Paris has issued its first decision.

The ad hoc division of the court said that a case filed by Jamaican hammer thrower Nayoka Clunis could not be reviewed on its merits, as it was filed outside the jurisdiction of the court.

The athlete was qualified and selected by the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) to represent Jamaica in Paris, but her name was not submitted by the JAAA to World Athletics (WA) due to “an unfortunate omission”.

Temporary offices

This meant that her place was re-allocated to another athlete, Iryna Klymets (Ukraine).

A panel of the court had held a hearing on the matter over the weekend.

The CAS opened two temporary offices in Paris last week for the games.

The ad hoc division has been set up to quickly resolve any legal disputes that arise during the games, while the CAS Anti-Doping Division will adjudicate anti-doping-related matters arising during the games.
