New Court of Appeal President nominated

The Government has agreed to nominate Ms Justice Caroline Costello as President of the Court of Appeal. She is currently a judge in the Court of Appeal.

The vacancy will arise due to the forthcoming retirement of the current president Mr Justice George Birmingham on 4 August.

The Government has formally advised President Higgins, who makes judicial appointments on the advice of the Government.

'Valuable expertise'

The Minister for Justice Helen McEntee described Ms Justice Costello “an experienced judge of the Court of Appeal, with valuable expertise across all areas of law”.

She also paid tribute to the retiring president for his many years of distinguished service.

Ms Justice Costello was educated at UCD, the University of Oxford, and King’s Inns.

She was called to the Bar in 1988 and called to the Inner Bar in 2010.

Appointed as a judge of the High Court in 2014, she joined the Court of Appeal in 2018.
