Law Society ADR team take top prize in Dubai
The Law Society team has won the International European Institute for Conflict Resolution Negotiation competition in Dubai.
The winning contestants were:
- Ruby Porter (Maples Group),
- Jennifer Maguire (A&L Goodbody LLP), and
- Borbala Gyenge (McCann FitzGerald LLP).
The competition is delivered in partnership with the European Institute for Conflict Resolution (EICR) and has been especially designed for law and business students worldwide.
It took place on 14-15 November.
The aims are to give students a basic understanding of how conflicts arise, as well as an introduction to conflict resolution, enabling participants to critically analyse methods and approaches.
The aim of the competition is to develop and nurture strong negotiation skills to help people in all industries resolve conflicts in their workplace, in their home, and in their personal life.
The ability to negotiate could change how you perceived conflict and how you dealt with it, said coach Dr Rachael Hession of the Law Society.
Cross-cultural issues
Entrants also gain an understanding of the principles behind negotiation, as well as cross-cultural issues that can occur.
Ruby, Jennifer and Bori were selected from the 'Lawyering Skills' group to travel to Dubai for this competition.
The ‘Lawyering Skills’ module, facilitated by John Lunney and Dr Rachael Hession, develops practical skills in client consultation, negotiation and mediation.
Extensive training and feedback prepared the team for the competition. Past participants also provided valuable feedback in practice rounds.
Well done all!
