Blackhall Place wins Bréagchúirt Uí Dhálaigh
A Blackhall Place team has lifted the top honours at Bréagchúirt Uí Dhálaigh 2024.
Gael Linn runs the annual exclusively Irish-language moot which is held in honour of the late Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh (former President of Ireland, Chief Justice and Attorney General).
The Law Society team consisted of:
- Katie Nic Craith from An Rinn (of Orbitus Law LLP in Cork),
- Gráinne Ní Fhrighil from Dublin (of DLA Piper Ireland LLP in Dublin), and
- Tommy McDarby (Mac Diarmada) from Carlow (of Regan McEntee and Partners LLP in Meath).
The trio appeared for the appellants in the final, but appeared for both the appellants and the respondent during the preliminary rounds.
During the day, they saw off challenges from the University of Limerick and in the end faced a strong team from University of Galway to win the competition.
The contest is open to students from the Law Society, the King’s Inns and the country’s third level institutions.
Scenario
This year’s scenario dealt with the egg-shell skull rule and nervous shock.
The qualifying rounds were run in the King’s Inns, adjudicated by barristers.
The final was held in the Supreme Court before Ms Justice Nuala Butler (Court of Appeal), Mr Justice Conor Dignam, (High Court) and Judge Sinéad Ní Chúlacháin (Circuit Court).
Katie Nic Craith serves as public relations officer with the Law Society’s 2024/2025 Cumann Gaelach, while Gráinne Ní Fhrighil and secretary Tommy McDarby also serve on the committee.
