Free webinar on juries in civil proceedings
Law Society Skillnet has organised a free live webinar focusing on the extensive rights that litigants have to a trial by jury in civil cases.
The retired judge of the High Court, Bernard Barton, will discuss the issues raised by the topic – including whether there is the possibility of negligence if a litigant is not given this option.
The lunchtime event takes place on Wednesday, 27 November (1pm to 2pm) online via Zoom. It is worth one general CPD hour by e-learning.
Causes of action
Bernard Barton will explain the background to the right to trial by jury, and identify relevant causes of action where trial by jury is available.
The webinar will also explore the important considerations that practitioners should take into account when deciding on the appropriate form for proceedings, and address the question of whether trial by jury is a missed opportunity in modern litigation.
Bernard Barton was called to the Bar in 1977 and was appointed as a judge of the High Court in 2014. He was subsequently appointed as head of the Civil Juries Division of the High Court in 2017, serving in that role until retirement in 2021.
Since retirement, he has acted as an executive and non-executive director on industry and charitable boards, and as a company director. He has also provided mediation and consultancy services.
Richard Hammond SC (Hammond Good LLP), a member of the Council of the Law Society, will chair the event.
