Heavyweight speakers for litigation update

The Law Society Litigation Committee will hold its annual update on Wednesday 23 October at Blackhall Place.

Attendance will yield three CPD points by general study and will give updates on specific developments in law and litigation practice.

Insights

Expert speakers will share their insights on:

  • Preparing for a mediation,
  • Developments in personal injuries,
  • Common issues arising in the Construction Contracts Act,
  • Small Company Administrative Rescue Process (SCARP) as an effective remedy,
  • Inherent jurisdiction (capacity) applications,
  • Inquests – practical preparation guidance.

The event will be chaired by Joe O’Malley (managing partner Hayes Solicitors), thecurrent chair of the Litigation Committee.

Speakers include:

  • Eamon Harrington (partner, Comyn Kelleher Tobyn), who acts in the defence of complex and catastrophic medical-negligence claims, professional-negligence claims, and commercial disputes,
  • Graham Kenny (partner, Eversheds Sutherland), who is a Law Society Council member and has a particular expertise in restructuring and insolvency,
  • Solicitor and mediator Julie Sadlier, who works on insolvency, bankruptcy, and possession law and is a supporter of efficient and early dispute resolution,
  • Stuart Gilhooly SC (partner, H J Ward & Co, small picture), who practices mostly in personal injuries and sports law and is a past Law Society President 2017//18. Gilhooly is also a Court Services board member and was the Law Society nominee for the Personal Injuries Commission and the Administration of Civil Justice Review,
  • Martin Lawlor (managing partner, Coghlan Kelly Solicitors, New Ross), who practises in litigation and dispute resolution and is a Council member of the Law Society since 2007,
  • Bernard Gogarty (partner, Smyth & Son), who has extensive experience in conveyancing and litigation – including PI, construction law and commercial arbitration,
  • Áine Hynes SC (partner, St John Solicitors), a Law Society Council member since 2007 and current chair of the Law Society’s Mental Health Law and Capacity Taskforce, where her extensive submissions helped shape amendments to the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015.
