Three solicitors to go to District Court

Three solicitors have been nominated for appointment to the District Court.

Peter White, Catherine Ghent, and Áine Clancy BL will fill three vacancies that arose after the retirement of Judge Cormac Dunne on 15 June,  the death of Judge Elizabeth MacGrath on 3 July,  and the retirement of Judge Marian O’Leary on 30 August.

Mr Justice Denis McDonald and Mr Justice Anthony Collins, former Advocate General to the Court of Justice of the European Union, have been nominated for appointment to the Court of Appeal.

Vacancies

The first vacancy in the Court of Appeal arose following the creation of an additional post in the Court of Appeal under the Courts, Civil Law, Criminal Law and Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2024

The second vacancy in the court arose due to appointment of Ms Justice Caroline Costello as the President of the Court of Appeal.

The Government also nominated Sara Phelan SC for appointment to the High Court. 

The vacancy in the High Court arose following the appointment of the Ms Justice Niamh Hyland to the Court of Appeal on 3 October.
