CJEU preliminary reference procedure talk

A judge of the Court of the Justice of the EU (CJEU) will speak at a DCU Brexit Institute seminar next month.

A keynote speech by Judge Savvas Papasavvas, (vice president of the EU General Court) at DCU on 9 October will be on the topic ‘The EU general court and the preliminary reference procedure’.

The 9 October event is held within the framework of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence REBUILD project.

It will examine one of the most significant changes in the EU judicial system in decades – the recent amendment to the protocol of the European Court of Justice.

Passenger rights

This amendment empowers the EU General Court to hear preliminary references by national courts in several fields – including customs law, VAT and passenger rights.

The event, which runs from 4pm to 6pm, will be opened by Dr Tanya Ní Mhuirthile (head of the School of Law and Government, DCU) and moderated by Professor Federico Fabbrini (DCU Full Professor of European Law and Brexit Institute founder).

The event will also see the launch of the DCU Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) 'The EU in Changing Times'.

This initiative is led by senior research fellow Dr Ian Cooper and funded with the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs Communicating Europe Initiative 2024.
