Transparency vs data-privacy clash for discussion

The Law Society EU and International Affairs Committee will hold a seminar on balancing privacy and transparency this autumn.

It will be addressed by experts including former Data Protection Commissioner Helen Dixon and lawyer Paul Egan SC.

The seminar will focus on the 2022 WM and Sovim SA v Luxembourg Business Registers cases, which some have described as setting back the fight against cross-border corruption.

Expert speakers at this EU and International Affairs Committee seminar will discuss these cases and recent rulings which create a clash between the public interest in transparency and data protection rights.

The trend towards business secrecy and its corrosion of the battle against terrorist financing and money laundering will also be explored.

Topics

  • Setting the scene: facts of the conflicting Manni and WM/Sovim cases,
  • Recent rulings in their wider context,
  • Trend towards business secrecy.

The discussion will be chaired by ComReg Commissioner Helen Dixon who was previously Data Protection Commissioner and Registrar of Companies.

Speakers

  • Paul Egan SC – Paul is a member of the EU and International Affairs Committee and has written and presented on this topic,
  • Dr TJ McIntyre – associate professor and head of teaching and learning at UCD Sutherland School of Law, and chair of civil liberties group Digital Rights Ireland,
  • Dr Alexander Chance – head of policy and research  at Transparency International Ireland and specialist in strategic approaches to transnational organised crime and corruption.

Booking for this event is now open.
