Law Society Diploma in Director Skills and Duties

The Law Society Diploma Centre will launch a Diploma in Director Skills and Duties this spring.

Designed for lawyers aiming to step into non-executive director or trustee roles, or those looking to advance in their careers, this course provides training in decision-making, leadership, and corporate governance.

Highlights include:

  • In-person workshops covering boardroom dynamics, crisis management, and career development,
  • Corporate governance fundamentals, fiduciary duties, financial and ESG reports, and effective board behaviour through real-world simulations,
  • Boardroom simulation to gain insight into how to navigate effective board strategies,
  • Crisis management and how to prepare for, respond to, and recover from organisational crises.

Lecturers and topics

  • Gerard Ryan (Eversheds Sutherland): introduction to directors,
  • Alice Murphy (Mason Hayes & Curran LLP): introduction to charities’ legal and regulatory landscape,
  • Susanne McMenamin (Matheson LLP): principles of good governance,
  • Nessa Joyce (William Fry LLP): the board and climate and environmental considerations,
  • James Roche (Fieldfisher LLP): managing conflicts of interest and ethical considerations,
  • Walter Bardenwerper: control environment and role of board of directors.
