Trainees' legal research aids Irish Red Cross

The Irish Red Cross (IRC) and the Law Society are in continued collaboration with the roll-out of a legal-research project initiative with the support of the Law School at the Law Society.

Participants are trainee solicitors who are due to complete their qualification and enter onto the Roll of Solicitors this year.

Over three months to the end of 2024, participants contributed to valuable legal research in areas of benefit to IRC staff, volunteers, and clients.

In one project, the participants performed a review of law and governance covering all aspects of transport of medical and non-medical passengers in IRC vehicles.

Consolidation

This research provides a consolidation of guidance for Irish Red Cross driver volunteers and volunteer leads, and gives clarity on requirements.

The research was summarised and presented to volunteer directors.

Participants were awarded IRC Certificates of Appreciation at the Law Society last month. They also earned certification of pro bono hours which can be added to their law firms’ pro bono pledge reporting.

Participants of the programme were supervised by IWLA chair, solicitor Rosemarie Hayden, and policy officer Anna Doran.

The programme was  jointly facilitated by Ali Magee of IRC and Emma Cooper of the Law Society.
