Big jump in number of solicitors reported to SRA

Britain’s Solicitors Regulatory Authority (SRA) has doubled the length of time that a complainant can expect to wait for a reply, the Law Society of England and Wales Gazette reports.

The wait time is now up to 55 days, from 20-25 days two months ago.

An SRA spokesman confirmed that this is because of an unprecedented level of reports coming in to the regulator.

In a three-month period last year, the regulator received over 800 reports more than the 2,800 forecast.

Fee increase

SRA chair Anna Bradley has said there will need to be an increase in the practising certificate fee in order to improve efficiency.

The regulator is now investigating trends behind the rise.
