Seminar on examination of vulnerable witnesses

A Knowledge Exchange event titled "Language and the Cross-Examination of Vulnerable Witnesses: Perspectives from Linguistics and Law" will be held at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Dublin on Wednesday, 16 April, from 5pm-8pm.

This event will delve into how vulnerable witnesses are cross-examined in criminal trials across Britain and Ireland.

It will present findings from the ‘Mapping the Changing Face of Cross Examination’ project, which was conducted by researchers from the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, and funded by the Nuffield Foundation.

Key highlights of the event include:

  • Findings on professional attitudes towards how language is used in the cross-examination of vulnerable witnesses,
  • Empirical evidence from trial transcripts about the actual questioning practices.

Questioning techniques will also be examined, and how these techniques align (or don't) with professional best practices.

Intermediaries

The role of intermediaries and their interventions during cross-examination is also on the agenda.

Adjustments for vulnerable defendants: Whether any such adjustments are made and how they affect the process, is also a topic.

A roundtable discussion will encourage participants to reflect on the findings, and identify areas for improvement.

This event is especially relevant to judges, advocates, intermediaries, and other professionals working within the criminal justice system.

Free entry, but spaces are limited and evening refreshments will be provided.

To attend, register through this Eventbrite link.
