Flexible judicial pay options on table in Britain

Flexible pay options for the judiciary in Britain could be introduced to attract more lawyers to the bench.

That country’s Lord Chancellor Shabana Mahmood has confirmed that a major review will look at the extent to which pay is hindering judicial recruitment.

The Senior Salaries Review Body (SSRB) was asked last December to review the judicial structure and its terms of reference have now been published.

It will examine the extent to which pay incentivises applicants, including the effectiveness of the London weighting allowance.

The SSRB has also been asked to recommend 'a range of flexible pay options' to address current recruitment issues and assess whether the evidence supports different pay between fee-paid and salaried office, the England and Wales Gazette reports.

The terms of reference document states that judicial pay is among the highest in the public sector. Judges received 7% and 6% increases over the last two pay rounds.

Overall judicial remuneration for 2024/25 was £778 million.
