‘Memorable’ human-rights conference in store

The Law Society’s Human Rights and Equality Committee holds its annual conference later this month in the Presidents’ Hall, Blackhall Place, Dublin 7.

The event, organised by Law Society Professional Training, takes place on Friday 28 November (10am to 4pm) and five general CPD hours are available.

The committee says that this year’s conference will offer “much more than a standard legal event” and is promising a rewarding and memorable experience for lawyers, students, and anyone with a genuine interest in human rights in Ireland.

Speakers

Committee chair and Law Society Council member Cristina Stamatescu will chair the conference and Mr Justice Gerard Hogan of the Supreme Court will deliver the keynote address, entitled: ‘Human rights in Ireland, Europe, and beyond’.

Speakers include:

  • Noeline Blackwell (online-safety co-ordinator, Children’s Rights Alliance),
  • Jim Clarken (chief executive, Oxfam Ireland),
  • Catherine Cosgrave (solicitor, Irish Immigrant Council),
  • Dr Andrew Forde (assistant professor, European human-rights law, Dublin City University),
  • Mr Justice Gerard Hogan (Supreme Court),
  • Eithne Lynch (head of pro bono, A&L Goodbody LLP),
  • Katie Mannion (managing solicitor, Irish Refugee Council),
  • Maria McCloskey (executive director, Irish Rule of Law International),
  • Michael McNamara (MEP, Ireland South),
  • Dr Clíodhna Murphy, (associate professor, Maynooth University),
  • Professor Colin Scott (registrar, deputy president, and vice-president for academic affairs, UCD),
  • Colin Smith SC (adjunct assistant professor, School of Law, TCD),
  • Natalia Brady (independent human-rights consultant), and
  • Matthew Holmes BL (member, Bar Council of Ireland).
