Green list to be cut to seven countries

The Department of Foreign Affairs has updated the green list of countries from which people arriving into or back to Ireland do not have to restrict their movements.

Earlier this week, the Government said Ireland would “broadly support” the European Commission’s proposals for a colour-coded system for travel to various countries, though this is not expected to be agreed until mid-October.

In the meantime, it pledged to update the green list.

Requirements

The current list, which includes ten countries, remains in effect until midnight on Sunday 20 September. From 21 September, however, Estonia, Italy, Hungary, Greece, Greenland, Norway and Slovakia will drop off the list.

The new list adds Germany, Poland, Iceland and Cyprus and retains Finland, Latvia and Lithuania.

A number of countries on the new list are, however, imposing either self-isolation or testing requirements on travellers from Ireland. In effect, the only two countries currently allowing unrestricted travel are Germany and Poland.

The list will now be updated on a weekly basis, to include countries with a 14-day cumulative number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 of 25 or less, based on the latest data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Updates will be made on the basis of data each Thursday, with changes taking effect from the following Monday.
