Hibernian Law Journal lecture on regulation

This year’s Hibernian Law Journal Annual Lecture on 27 April will address the challenge of online disinformation.

Celene Craig of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland will join a distinguished panel of speakers to discuss ‘Disinformation in an Information Age: Ireland’s Response to a Global Challenge’.

This year’s free annual lecture will take place virtually at 6.30pm on Tuesday, 27 April.

Intending guests should register on Eventbrite to join on the night.

Challenge for regulators

Celene Craig will be joined by:

  • Professor Lorna Woods OBE, Professor of Internet Law at the University of Essex,
  • Paul Quigley, chief executive and co-founder of NewsWhip, an Irish company which tracks the spread of disinformation online.

Mr Justice Michael Twomey, the Judge-in-Residence of the Journal, will chair the panel.

The conversation will also touch on the challenge disinformation poses for regulators and policy-makers, particularly at an Irish and EU level.

Distinguished panel

Hibernian Law Journal deputy editor for development and events Julia Launders said: “The recent proliferation of false information online has been the subject of concern for individuals and regulators alike.

“The Hibernian Law Journal is delighted to have assembled such a distinguished panel to explore the impact of disinformation on society and discuss future regulatory solutions to this growing online challenge.”

Established in 1999, the Hibernian Law Journal is the law journal of the Law Society, edited by trainee and newly qualified solicitors.

It is supported by its benefactors drawn from the Inner Bar and its sponsor firms Arthur Cox LLP, ByrneWallace LLP, Matheson, and McCann FitzGerald.
