Human rights lawyer Aonghus Kelly is standing for election to the governing authority of National University of Ireland Galway.
The executive director of Irish Rule of Law International previously practised as a solicitor at Blake & Kenny on St Francis Street in Galway.

He is running on three key planks for governing authority work:NUI Galway as a leader, diversity and inclusion, and a sustainable future for the planet.
“The university can be one of the key engines for better and more sustainable growth for the city, the county, the province and indeed as a model for proper regional growth in Ireland.
“This will be done by continuing to raise the standard of education it provides to bring it in line with global standard-bearers in the sector,” says Kelly
Aonghus Kelly worked in the UK on cases related to the aftermath of the most recent war in Iraq and is also a member of the legal action committee of the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN).
He has worked in several countries, including for the EU in North Africa on criminal justice issues and in the defence at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).
Aonghus Kelly also worked for several years in both Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina on the investigation and prosecution of war crimes, organised crime, corruption and terrorism matters.
He is qualified to practise law in New Zealand, Ireland, England and Wales, Cambodia and in Northern Ireland.
