UN disability role for Irish barrister

The United Nations Human Rights Council has appointed Irish barrister and disability law expert Professor Gerard Quinn (pictured, left) as Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities.

The holder of the position is charged with strengthening efforts to recognise, promote, implement and monitor the rights of persons with disabilities, in line with the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

'Academic and advocate'

Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney welcomed the appointment, describing Professor Quinn as a “world-renowned academic and advocate for disability rights.

Professor Quinn is professor emeritus in law at NUI Galway. He is a former director of research at the Law Reform Commission and has served two terms on the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission. He has also served on the Council of State, which advises the president.
