Woulfe meeting is postponed again

A planned meeting between Chief Justice Frank Clarke and Supreme Court judge Mr Justice Seamus Woulfe has again been postponed.

The two had been due to meet on Friday (9 October) but a statement said the Chief Justice had received a request for a further postponement on medical grounds.

He has agreed to reschedule the meeting for Tuesday of next week.

'Urgency'

“The Chief Justice has emphasised to Mr Justice Woulfe the urgency of bringing this process forward,” the statement said.

The meeting follows the publication of a report by Mrs Justice Susan Denham into Mr Justice Woulfe’s attendance at an Oireachtas Golf Society event in County Galway in August.

The report concluded that the resignation of Mr Justice Woulfe would be a ‘disproportionate’ response.

Propriety

It said, however, that his attendance at a public dinner during a pandemic had not been properly considered, given his new status as a judge of the Supreme Court.

In this regard, Mr Justice Woulfe was not sufficiently vigilant, the report said, and he failed to consider the propriety of his attendance.
