Applications are invited for a Policy Advisor role in the Policy Department of the Law Society of Ireland on a permanent basis. Reporting to the Director of Policy and working on issues at national, EU and international level.

The successful candidate will play a key role in advancing policy and law reform initiatives on matters that are reflective of the public interest and the interests of members of the Law Society. Some of the key aspects of the role include conducting research, developing and drafting policy documents, as well as devising and implementing lobbying strategies on matters that are a key strategic priority for the Law Society.

Guided by the Law Society’s Strategy 2024 – 2028, the appointee will work closely with the Council and also members of the Law Society’s Committees.

Main duties & key responsibilities 

The successful candidate will carry out the following duties in line with the Law Society’s strategic objectives and as directed by the Director of Policy:

Conduct research and draft evidence-based and authoritative policy papers on policy topics that are a priority for the Law Society,

Develop proposals for law reform, underpinned by credible arguments, that are reflective of the public interest and the interests of members of the Law Society,

Monitor developments in the external environment,

Play a key role in advancing specific policy issues as may be assigned,

Forge a strong and collaborative working relationship with members of Committees of the Law Society,

Engage with the Council of the Law Society, the Director of Policy, and also colleagues in the Policy Department, including colleagues at the Centre for Justice and Law Reform,

Engage with policy makers, non-governmental organisations and other key stakeholders on matters of concern to the Law Society,

Engage with other Law Societies and professional bodies on policy issues,

Draft policy-related communications for the President and Director General,

Serve as Secretary to a Law Society Committee or Task Force,

Such other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Policy from time to time.

Knowledge & skills required 

A third-level qualification in law, politics, business and law or similar is required.

A professional qualification would be desirable.

At least two year’s relevant experience in public affairs, policy development or experience as a political advisor or Parliamentary Assistant.

A strong understanding of the policy development and legislative processes in Ireland and the European Union.

Excellent writing and research skills.

Solution-oriented, highly collaborative and self-motivated.

Strong organisational and interpersonal skills.

An excellent command of written and spoken English.

A track record of success in handling competing demands.
