On Friday 11 October, over 160 solicitors from Monaghan, Cavan and Louth attended the North East CPD 2019 at the Glencarn Hotel, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan.

Organised by the Law Society Finuas Skillnet in association with Monaghan, Cavan, Drogheda and Louth Solicitors’ Bar Associations, the conference provided an opportunity for local solicitors to stay up-to-date in areas of law relevant to them in their daily work such as family law, employment law and probate.

Small Practice Support Project

This year the North East CPD conference also focused on the Law Society’s Small Practice Support Project, a strategic plan that assists sole practitioners and smaller practices to grow their businesses and achieve greater success for themselves, their staff and their local communities.

Solicitor Kevin Hickey of Hickey, Henderson & Co, Clones is President of the Monaghan Bar Association and attended this year’s event. He said the conference was an opportunity for local solicitors to learn about new practice changes, network with colleagues and raise concerns solicitors may have relating to different areas of practice.

“The North East CPD is the perfect opportunity for solicitors from the north east region to come together, collaborate and discuss relevant changes to the law,” he said.

Value of legal services

“Small practices and sole practitioners are similar to other small businesses. As business owners in border counties, and with Brexit looming, it is essential we prepare well and protect ourselves against possible effects.”

“Solicitors practicing in Monaghan, Cavan and Louth employ hundreds of people in high-quality professional jobs and provide legal advice for neighbouring businesses and their communities in this region,” he explained.

“For the security and legacy of our practices, we must actively try to protect and grow our businesses. The Small Practice Support Project provides tools that solicitors and sole practitioners can use to ensure we are running our practices as efficiently and effectively as possible.”

“It is important that solicitors can adapt when challenging circumstances arise. As part of this, we must be able to communicate the value of our legal services to our clients and potential clients.”

“Local solicitors engage daily with their communities and act as legal experts on business, employment, family and conveyancing matters, among others,” he said.

“The North East CPD provided updates to your local solicitors in areas of family law, probate, conveyancing, employment law and more, so you can be assured your solicitor has the most up-to-date knowledge to give you the best advice.”

“Engaging with your solicitor early on important matters can help you save money and provide clarity and reassurance. If you need legal advice, talk to your local solicitor at the earliest opportunity.”
